Alfredo Corell

Degree and PhD in Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), specializing in Immunology and doctoral thesis at the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. He did a post-doctoral stay at the Anthony Nolan Foundation in London. For 18 years he carried out research and immunological diagnostic work.

His work in the area of Immunogenetics and Histocompatibility includes the discovery of a human chromosome 6 pseudogene within the HLA system: HLA-DRB6. He has more than 60 scientific publications in high impact journals including the prestigious New England Journal of Immunology, Lancet, Immunology Today and Mucosal Immunology.

Corell is the coordinator of the teaching innovation project Immunomedia, a digital platform for dissemination involving professors from six Spanish and two foreign universities, which has been recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition, he became popular on social networks thanks to his teaching methods, with initiatives such as Immunopills, small videos uploaded to YouTube, in which he explains complex aspects of immunology in a graphic and simple way.

As a science popularizer, he frequently collaborates with the informative television program La Sexta Noche, such as with the program Horizonte: Informe Covid, and in 2016 he gave a TED talk on educational innovation.

Corell has denounced the harassment suffered at his university and work center for being homosexual. His visibility and commitment to the LGTBI collective has been recognized several times and has made him an LGTBI reference in science.
