Robert Biedron

Robert Biedroń (April 13, 1976) is a Polish politician and activist and is currently chairman of the European Union Commission for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. In 2001 he was one of the founders of the organization Campaign Against Homophobia (Kampania przeciw Homofobii), of which he was chairman until 2009. In 1995, during a stay in Berlin, he discovered the activities of the LGBT organization Manometer and decided to devote himself to social activism in favor of sexual minorities.

Robert Biedroń joined the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland and also joined the party’s youth organization. He was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and General Rapporteur on LGBT rights. From 2008 to 2016, he served on the Human Rights Advisory Council of Open Society Foundations. In 2011 he joined the Palikot movement, and was elected MP in the Gdynia – Słupsk constituency in November, obtaining almost 17000 votes.

In 2009, he ran in the municipal elections of Słupsk, a Polish city in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, and was elected mayor, thus becoming the first gay mayor in Poland. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. In 2016 he was awarded the French National Order of Merit for his fight for the rights of sexual minorities.
